Mr. Justice Hasan Foez Siddique

Born on September 26, 1956, in the district of Kushtia, Bangladesh, to late Abdul Gofur Mollah and late Noorjahan Begom, Mr. Justice Hasan Foez Siddique obtained his M.A. and LL.B. degrees and embarked on his career as a lawyer. He got enrolled as an Advocate of the District Court, the High Court Division and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 1981, 1983, and 1999 respectively.


Throughout his career, his Lordship served as the Legal Advisor to various entities, including the Khulna City Corporation, Kushtia Municipality, Jalalabad Gas Transmission Company and Chief Law Advisor of the Ministry of Home Affairs. He also held the position of Additional Attorney General for Bangladesh. In recognition of his legal professionalism, sincerity, and exceptional legal acumen, he was elevated as the Judge of the High Court Division in 2009 and subsequently as the judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in 2013.


His Lordship assumed the office of the Chairman of Bangladesh Judicial Service Commission on 30 April, 2015 and served the office with irrefutable glory till his retirement. His Lordship actively participated in various conferences and events, including the South Asian Judges Regional Forum on Economic and Financial Crime in Sri Lanka held in 2011; the South Asian Conference on Environmental Justice in Pakistan held in 2012; and the International Conference on Environment in Delhi, India held in 2015. He also attended the 17th International Conference of Chief Justices of the World in Lucknow, India in 2016 and the 2nd China ASEAN Justice Forum in China, held in 2017 respectively. Notably, he was the guest of honor at the 14th Convocation of the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences in Kolkata,  India held  in October 2022. His Lordship also attended symposium on “Interpretation of the Constitution in the Protection of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms” in Turkey held in 2022. His Lordship glorified the “4th International Symposium of the AACC Secretariat for Research and Development (AACC SRD)” with his presence in Seoul, Republic of Korea held from May 28, 2023 to June 02, 2023.


On December 30, 2021, his Lordship was sworn in as the 23rd Chief Justice of Bangladesh, a position he held until his retirement on September 25, 2023. During his tenure, he implemented several initiatives to enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and accessibility of the justice delivery system in Bangladesh. Remarkable achievements include the introduction of the "Chief Justice Award" to recognize diligent and competent judges and judgeship, the inauguration of the "Bijoy-71" building to strengthen judicial infrastructure, and the establishment of the "Naykunja" litigant shed to assuage the sufferings of the litigants. Moreover, in order to monitor and inspect the activities of the District Judiciary closely, his Lordship constituted eight Monitoring Committees, headed by eight Honourable Judges of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh for the eight divisions of Bangladesh. This resulted in acceleration of disposal of cases in the subordinate courts significantly. Introduction of six court technology in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh in order to add new dimension in ensuring access to justice is another extraordinary step taken by his Lordship during his tenure as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh. His Lordship also fulfilled the noble desire of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to preserve the name of the martyred lawyers during the great Liberation War of Bangladesh in the Supreme Court premises by establishing a memorial named “Smriti Chironjib (স্মৃতি চিরঞ্জীব). The foundation stone of the “Record Building” in the Supreme Court of Bangladesh was also installed in materialization of his Lordship’s earnest endeavor.


Furthermore, under his active guidance Memorandum of Understanding was signed in September 6, 2022 with the National Judicial Academy of India to enhance the professional skills and legal knowledge of judges in Bangladesh.


It is certainly worth mentioning that his Lordship handed down a great many number of highly celebrated judgements throughout his untiring judicial career.


On June 10, 2024, Mr. Justice Hasan Foez Siddique has assumed the office of the Director General of the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI). His Lordship had the opportunity to visit China, India, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Turkey, Pakistan, Malaysia and Thailand.


Mr. Justice Hasan Foez Siddique is widely regarded as a sublime soul, versatile jurist, and a graceful instance of dignity and refinement.
