Madam Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana
Madam Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, former Judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has assumed the position of the Director General of the Judicial Administration Training Institute on 20 May, 2021 in accordance with section 11(2) of the Judicial Administration Training Institute Act, 1995. Her Lordship is the first ever woman to grace the position of the Director General of the Judicial Administration Training Institute.
Madam Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana obtained BSc and LLB
degrees and was enrolled as an advocate in the Mymensingh
District Court in July 1972. On December 20, 1975, she joined
Bangladesh Judicial Service as a Munsif and had forever become
an extraordinary part of history as Madam Justice Nazmun Ara
Sultana was the first ever female judge to enter Bangladesh
Judiciary. Her Lordship had a diverse career in the subordinate
judiciary and she was promoted to District and Sessions Judge
on December 20, 1990. Not only was Her Lordship a brilliant
judicial officer, she also was a dynamic administrator. As
recognition of her brilliance and professional excellence, again
making history, Madam Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana was
appointed as the first ever female Justice of the High Court
Division and the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of
Bangladesh in the years 2000 and 2011 respectively.
Continuing her outstanding career as a Judge of the
Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Madam Justice Nazmun Ara
Sultana made her position prominent and distinguished in the
highest judiciary of the country by handing down many
landmark judgments. It is mentionable that Her Lordship
presided over a bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme
Court for a long time. She has an impeccable reputation and is
highly respected by the bar and bench and within the legal
community of the country. Her contribution to the subordinate
judiciary as well as the higher judiciary is remarkable and well
regarded.
As the first ever female Judge in the history of both
subordinate and higher judiciary of Bangladesh, Madam Justice
Nazmun Ara Sultana broke the stereotypical barriers for women
and she is the pioneer who paved the way for other women and
motivated them to enter the judiciary and pursue a career. Her
Lordship is the Founding President of Bangladesh Women
Judges Association (BWJA). She is also an active member of
International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) since its
formation and she has served as Secretary of IAWJ for 2
consecutive terms of 4 years.
During her long and eventful career, Madam Justice
Nazmun Ara Sultana has attended many international and
national training programs and conferences both as a
participant and as an invited speaker and resource person.
